Hello and good day to you from episode 42 of our podcast series Project Breakaway. A metaphorical and literal time in the day when we here at Predator Cycling take some time away from working in the back shop to come and share with our listeners what we're doing, how we're doing it, what it takes to do it, our ideas, our innovative success stories and even our missteps and failures. If you find yourself with an interest in bicycles, composite manufacturing, out of the box design or even curiosities beyond, I encourage you to stick with us, settle in and learn a little. I'm Courtney B, co-owner and project manager of Predator Cycling. And I'm here with my partner Arm Goan, the other co-owner, CEO, lead designer and engineer and woodworker. Lumber elf. How's it going, Arm? Uh, it's going pretty good. Um, yes, I've been a lumber elf. I like that. Maybe plywood, plywood elf, maybe? I don't know. Plywood is birch. Is that also plywood? Is plywood just like a general name for wood? Oh, okay. That's the the type of wood and and plywood is the um is how it's uh formatted. I mean like the style of wood that it is. Yeah. So I saw a toddler Montessori toy online for Christmas. And I didn't want to buy it and I was like, can we make this? And you're like, I can make anything. Yeah. That's right. Um, yeah, and it wasn't going to come for Christmas in time if we actually got one that was reasonably priced. And then me being me, I was like, well, I wouldn't have done it like that. I would have done X, Y and Z. And then, Anyways. Anyway. But we did it. It's done. I just got there and I'm putting on. Child safe finish, linseed oil and beeswax. Smells horrible, but anyway. It's a horrible, it's a very awkward smell. It's horrible. Anyway, here we are three days before Christmas and I got one more coat to put on, so. Yeah. I'll get it done. It'll be all done. It's pretty cool. Maybe post a picture. Um, it's pretty cool. Little set up. So, yeah. First plywood project. Yeah, we haven't cut wood in the shop in a long time. It's very messy. It is. And we're not set up to cut it in anything. Way shape or form. So, um, yeah. That was fun. Uh, little little side project on the weekends. And come in early and try and get it done. Okay. So, um, happy Hanukkah to those that celebrate. I think it's the fourth, fifth day of Hanukkah. Something like that. Yeah. Happy Hanukkah. And Merry Christmas to those who celebrate. Three days to go until the big guy comes down the chimney. Uh-huh. Or as our four-year-old said, he's got to go outside. There's no way anyone can fit down this chimney. He, we have to put the tree outside. Uh-huh. We're informed that the tree must go outside. Yeah. So, that seemed like a good solution though. You were gone last night, but he was inspecting the chimney. Again last night because I said, oh, Christmas is, you know, three days away. And he's like, he's coming. Down the. He's looking at it. He's still not quite sure how how it all works. I don't know. Well, you'll figure it out. He's a smart guy. He'll come up with something. Okay. So, um, in anticipation of Christmas. Yes. Our celebrated holiday. And also Armenian Christmas here in a few weeks. Yep. January 6th. January 6th. Yep. The same day as the insurrection. It's the Armenian Christmas. Yeah. Yeah, it's the sixth. Oh, okay. It's so weird that it has a different connotation to me now. I'm like, oh, January 6th. Oh. Anyway. Yeah, that's strange. I'm not to get political, but it just clicked in my head for a second. Yeah, that is strange. Um, okay, well also Armenian Christmas on January 6th. Um, I wanted to talk about, um, what your imaginary wish list would be. So basically as a cyclist, um, what would you absolutely lose yourself over if Chris Kringle dropped a nice bike under the tree? So let's. That would be awesome. Okay, so let's take the RF 20 red frame. Let's take our frame and then from there. Yeah, well, this is a relevant topic because I have been building my RF 20 and I'm finally next year going to be getting my RF 20. So, um, I have been looking at it quite a bit. Um, I don't know. It it's uh, so like, I mean, for me, you know, the I used to race. Um, I used to think I was somewhat fast. Talking like 12 years ago. Yeah. Um, I mean, I don't race anymore. Um, I'm not going to race again. Um, but you still like punch it. Like if we're on the tandem, like you're not going for like, you think it's funny to be like, oh, I'm going to go really fast now and then you hurt yourself. I'm confused. Um, yeah, I mean, it's fun. Like I I like going fast. I like a punchy fast bike. Um, so the RF 20 is perfect for that and I'm, you know, I'm not really like, um, I'm not going to be doing like dirt brobes or anything. I'm just mostly road riding around here. So you know, good roads, bad roads, um, up and down undulating. No massive climbs in our area. So I don't really have to worry about that too much. Um, so yeah, like I want a nice fast, you know, kind of crit bike style bike, but um, for a, uh, you know, uh, late 30s, you know, average build type of guy. Yeah, exactly. Um, a bike that I can go out there and have fun. I can go do a century every now and then. I can go do some group rides. You do a century. Why not? Where? I don't know. Find one. The the the pedal for pause. They have a, there's they have like an 80 or 90 mile, 80 mile run. I think 60 was the big. I don't know. I feel like three or four years. Yeah, but um, anyways, there's a couple. I do that because they have, I think they announced it for April this year here in outside Nashville. Done. Pedal for pause. Let's do it. Okay. I'm in. Um, Yeah, it's so like I I you know, that's the kind of stuff I do now. But I still like, you know, something that's a little bit fast. It's got a little pick up to it. Not that I'm going to be going that fast or anything. But like, you know, when I want to, it's there. Um. Right. Also, next year you have to build a mini RF 24. What is it? A 16-inch wheel? Yes. For. Uh, yeah. We're going. I got to I got to kind of do a little bit of figuring out when his. growth spurts are, so I can time it out right. Um, but yes. I'm building a. Matching. Uh, you saw. Everyone that anyone that saw the push bike that we built for that LinkedIn learning class that I did. Um, I am. We are doing a a new version of it as a pedal bike for. Um, for the boys. So, uh, we will have and we've. I don't know, we'll see. Um, I'm probably going to end up cutting a mold for it. Like a legit mold for it. So we'll see what happens with that. But. Um, yes, you may be seeing some kids bikes from us in 2023. Um, yeah. Uh, so. Yes, I've been looking a lot. And it's it's hard because like, so I mean, obviously. I'm looking at R 20. Um, and I'm obviously looking at a major. Um, road cockpit. Um. That's I mean, that's a given. Are you starting with handlebars? I'm starting with handlebars. Okay. Because that's kind of like. Those are the predator parts. Okay. So that's kind of. And like those are basics. And I mean, I want those because they. One, they kind of work together, they're kind of designed to be work together. Um, and it meets the needs that I have. I just kind of assumed that that's what you're going to have on there. Yeah, it is what I would have on there. Um, and then the kind of the big question for me is I kind of been bouncing around the idea. Of what I would get for components. Like if I would go down the, you know, the last bike I built. Was FSA, which is cool. I like it. You're talking about group sets? Group sets, yeah. That's. So you're talking about. Shit. Primarily your shifters and derailers are the most important parts. Cassette, chain. Um, and then if you're going full group set, you know, you're looking at brakes. Obviously, probably you're going to stay within the group set. And those are because those are electric and electronic. And those have to. Electronic. Basically can't mix and match. No, and if the RF 20 is designed. To only work with electronic and and disc brakes. Those are two things that we decided early on. Um, there's no internal cable routing. I mean, there's internal cable routing for wire, but not for cable for for bike. Uh, for derailer systems. We decided that early on that's what we're going to do. Um. So, you're basically. Uh, FSA, which is what the last bike I built up. Was and before that was, you know, Shimano Derace. And this is for your dream bike or is there like a. This is my next year bike. Okay. This is my next year dream bike. But like, is there like, okay, there's Shimano. There's FSA. What else? There's SRAM and there's Campagnolo. Those are your kind of your. Is Campagnolo considered to be like one of the higher the better ones? It has always historically been the most expensive, the nicest quality that you could get. Okay. Um, they kind of. But on your dream bike, you wouldn't want the nicest. You know, so like Campy is is done really well. It's cool. I I I like that what they've done with EPS in the last couple years. their electronic group set. I have felt that the last couple years that the Shimano Durace line has just had this Christmas to the the crisp. You said Christmas. You said Christmas. Crisp. Crispness? Crispness. Crispy. Crispy, crispy shifting. I don't know. It's just been like really. Nice and crisp. Nice and crisp shifts. Okay. So you're not going after like a G wagon because it looks pretty. But you're like a nice reliable Toyota. I want the bike that is going to be light, stiff, strong, fast. And when I push that shift button, it shifts. You think Campy doesn't do that? I think Campy Campy does do that. But like one, it's still got some wired systems. I don't like some of the connectors that they use. And I'm also one of those people that if I go Campy, I'm going to go with Campy wheels to match because I want it matching. Like I want this match set. So if I go Campy, I'm going to have to go down the wheel path of Campy. Which means I'm going because I want deep dish rims. They don't quite make the deeper sections that I want. I would go Boras, which is their deep dish carbon rim. Mhm. So it kind of it gets a little tricky. And when you're talking deep dish, you're talking like. Not pizzas, but. That's what I was thinking. I'm getting hungry. You do deep dish because you're what, going slower? No. Ouch. No, so you go deep dish. So, okay. All right, this is going. I'm thinking about pizza hut. Why pizza hut? We got Marcos right there on the street. Deep dish. Deep dish. Well, you're from California. You don't know these things. Oh, here it comes. Okay, so there's. Okay, without going too far down this rabbit hole. The RF 20 has isn't is a more of an aero frame design than most road frames in its class for for ride quality. Um, the RF 20, one of the compromises we had to make for aerodynamics was we had to create a larger than we wanted gap between the down tube and the front wheel. And that was in order to achieve the cross sections to get the fiber orientation that we wanted for the bike. Um, so it's a little bit larger of a gap than we wanted. In order to compensate for that gap, you can basically run deeper dish rims in CFD testing. If we ran slightly wider profile, deeper dish rims, it compensated quite a bit for that. That small gap. And that's one of the things with the RF 20 is we didn't try to make just a straight aero frame. We tried to make an aero frame that was aero, that rode well, that had good bike handling skills. It was just like the overall package. And so. Um, it does very good with aero wheels. And and aero wheels really kick in, you know, that you know, 17, 18. to 25 miles per hour, which is basically what I'm riding. Obviously, the faster you go, the more it makes a difference. But. Um, I need all the help I can get. So, um. I want some deep dish aero wheels. Plus it looks cool. Plus I always enjoyed riding them when I was racing and they're fun. And they make that cool noise when you ride. But they're race wheels. I mean, they used to be considered race wheels because I didn't have enough money to have like right on race wheels. I always had my race. What do you have on your bike now? Um, right now I have a pair of the vision. Not deep dish. They're 55, 50 mil, the wheel, the 50 mil depth, 60 mil depth. Um, everything I'm looking at now is like 80. If I went the Boras, I think the Boras are 70. I should know this. But I think they're 70 mil. Um, I haven't I've specked them on a couple bikes. We haven't used Boras in a while. When I eaves drop on your conversations, which is not eaves dropping because I literally sit two feet from you. I always hear you tell people because you talk to like tri athletes and stuff when you're trying to like. I've heard you talk like about deep dish. You're always suggesting it. Is that what everyone's riding? Well, I mean, if you're looking at RF 20, you're looking at more of an aero style frame. You're going to go 60 to 80 mil depth rims. I mean, you're just going to kind of go there. That's where you're going to go. Um, that's kind of the market. And they're more arrow. They're more aerodynamic, there's a weight penalty. It's a little heavier. So they're more for road and not for off for gravel or. Yeah, so like you're not going. I mean, you can, you can run deeper dish like 40, 30, 30s to 40, 50s on on gravel conditions. Gravel, you're typically going slower. Because you're going off road and on harder road conditions. So the benefit of aero wheels is less. Then if you're on the road going that 25 and then doing the sense. And you know, anywhere from 40 to 60 miles an hour in a descent or a sprint, you're going anywhere close, you know, 30 to 40 miles an hour. That makes a much larger difference. Then in gravel when you're not. And you're usually running. The aero penalty on. There's less of an aero penalty on gravel. And because of the bike setups and what you're running. So. And tire size. So you said you were going to go with FSA we now. Does that mean FSA wheels? Are there wheels? The vision, vision is their wheel set. So that's what you would go with on your build. I I would probably or I would go as zips. I would go on a Wii. But I I'm thinking of either going. I don't know, I'm cross between FSA we. Why is it we? Because that's what they're. W E. Not W I. Um. Uh. And then. So I would go to FSA or um Shimano or SRAM. Those are my three groupos I'm kind of thinking. I've kind of ruled out Campy for my personal build. I haven't run Campy in forever. Um, I'm kind of honestly leaning towards SRAM. That's my lean currently. Okay. I haven't run SRAM in a long time. I was going to say, you haven't got we haven't gotten SRAM anything in a long time. We've gotten Shimano and we've gotten FSA. I mean in the shop. Yeah. It's. To be honest, most customers currently have been specking. Um, the Ultegra, Ultegra DI 2 and Ultegra Durace quite a bit and a couple we. Those are Shimano. The Shimano, Shimano and FSA. Those are what they're. You're saying you're going to go with SRAM. I think I'm going to go with SRAM. What's that what are those called? SRAM. Um, it's the E Tap red. Um, I think that's what I'm going to go with and I'm going to go with their new um 858 is what I want wheels, I think with some 28 Victorias. We got We got Uh, We got Uh, We got I mean, also, I I don't know anything about this, but I remember we got for the for the RF 20, the original build when we were putting it in its case, we got group FSA. FSA. And I and I remember the shifter, it wasn't working. Uh, there was so that was the very first generation FSA we that came in and there was a pairing problem with one of the levers. Like we were in the back Googling stuff. Yes, because And I don't think we ever figured it out. Uh we did I ended up getting on the support team with them and it was a connection problem with one of the levers and their app because it was like a first generation of the app. Um, But yeah, I mean, it's it's it's good, it's the the we's pretty good and the price proposition for the that group set is is pretty darn good. Um, Price doesn't matter because Santa's leaving it under the tree. Yeah. Uh, So I would I yeah, I don't, you know, I don't, I'm up on the fence on it. But um, I think I'm probably leaning currently towards a SRAM Red build with um the 858 zips with some Victoria 28s. Um, tires. Um, obviously some uh genius bottle cages. And I saddle wise, I've been running an SMP for a long time. So I'm sticking with SMP on that. You suggest S I mean, I don't know what other brands there are. But you suggest SMP all the time. I do. And that hurts me. Where's my butt? Well, listen, saddle is a very personal. Maybe it's just there for men with this big hole for like the men. Yes. They make a women's specific saddle. It hurts. That saddle is the I think. And then I went back to what? I don't know what's on my bike. Oh, you had that strange saddle that we got you that you liked. Um, I can't even remember. Oh my gosh, I can't remember. Some like off brand something. I rode an SMP for a while and that was like the worst pain. Listen, uh, saddles are super personal. And that's why I tell everyone. I can't make a suit. I sit forward and you always tell me to sit back. Oh yeah, you scoot forward. On the saddle all the time. I sit I sit real forward. Well, also the problem you're the so you mostly what you were riding is the tandem. Um, and the tandem. The tandem. The tandem. The tandem we're running um platform pedals because it's we basically turned our super cool old. But my normal bike has platform pedals. Yes. You don't run clips. On any of those bikes. I wouldn't even know how to clip in. Can't even ride. You know how long it took me to be to to like in Santa Monica to like have the courage to put both feet down when I came to a stop sign. Yeah. You were like, just jump back on the bike. Um, was wearing like two inch heels when I was riding my bike. Oh yeah, you were dressed for work going as a commuter with your gear and your and your little uh bag in the back and. Rest in peace, saddle bag. Oh yeah, that died. That thing flew off. It did. Cuz I put those two inch heels in the back. Oh my God. Um, yeah, so you're running platform pedals. And you're running. pedals, you tend to move around more and kind of like position your feet and so you move on the saddle a little bit more and you're on the tandem and you're, you know, trying to look over your shoulder. What did you ride before SMP? What saddle? Uh, I had uh. I ran for a long time. I ran the flights for a long time. Um, uh, the physiques, the airions, I ran. Um, I was never really always like happy with my saddle. I was always like looking around for saddles. Like that felt really well. The SMP took a little bit, took me a couple weeks to get used to riding it. It was kind of strange at first. Um, and then. Once you got feeling back in your pelvis bones. Um, well, no. It was just because like I was just used to this. It's weird because like you steer with your hip so much and like that inside thigh against the saddle. Like you kind of like push on it when you're like going into a corner. Like I don't know. That just the feeling is different. Um, so it took me a minute to get used to it. Um, and the curve is just different. But um, once I did. I've kind of never had a problem, I've never had a problem. It's always been comfortable. So, um, yeah. I kind of that that's it. I just. Okay, so, um. Yeah, personal, but on the saddle. Just real quick. It is completely personal thing. There's no like right or wrong answer on saddles. It's what fits you. But it just sucks because you don't know until you buy it. You don't know until you ride. Like we have we have a a a a quick change saddle system here. So we can swap out saddles. And we have. Yeah, but I mean that's something you don't know until you ride for a long time. Yeah, I mean so and we have a size bike here where you can try some saddles out. Um, but yes, you you need to try them. And that's not all people are here. So, um, try saddles. Um, you know, be open to new saddles if you have a problem. If you have something you like. Also, um, they change our models. Saddle companies. So if you have something that you really like, get a couple. Get an extra saddle. Like get an extra one, put it in the closet. Like that's what I always tell people. I'm almost hiding my saddle in my closet. I do. I got a couple. I have two saddles stashed away in the back. For myself. Okay, so you made your uh cockpit on your IF 20. With your FSA we. FSA we, SRAM or Shimano. Oh, okay, well, that's not helpful. And then your your vision wheels. My zip 85. Oh, now you've changed it to zip. No, no, no. That I told you that was. Your zip wheels, your Victoria. 28s, yeah. Okay. And your, um, um, what. SMP dynamic is what I run. And then what else am I missing? Um, those are the main things. Pedals. Color. Santa just put it on the tree. It's not raw carbon. No. Don't say black and red. Oh man. Like. Every bike you have is black and red. I know. Oh, you have a white and black and red. I do. I have a white one too. Um, you know, I. So we have that display bike. We did for the. I'm actually looking at because it's in our office now. Um, the display bike for uh, um, AU. And I kind of the matte, the murdered matte black. It's kind of cool. But not the blue. The blue graphics, which was my call. was blue. I wanted an orangey fiery red, but you went with blue. And I have to say that was probably the wrong. You're right. Once again. Um, I I like the matte black. I'm kind of going for this matte black murdered look. I kind of I kind of dig it. Um, I would maybe go with that or, you know, maybe do like maybe a more dominant red bike. I've never really done a dominant red bike. What's dominant red? Like more red on the bike. Like a primarily red. Primarily red with small accents of other colors. Um, but uh, yeah, I had a gun metal, my my my carbon frame that I have. My road frame is mostly a carbon one. My old race frame is a black and white. Um, and then I have that chrome black bike too. Which I kind of dig. Yeah. Um, anyways, yeah, I might go with a murdered black bike. Um, Okay. I don't know. I don't know, it's hard. I don't always have a hard time when it comes to colors. That's it. And I got to get some new shoes. Not me, Santa's going to get some new shoes. I did say shoes. Your shoes are. Way past their expiration. Yeah, that's true. Okay. Um, so what would you put as a stocking stuffer? Stocking new shoes. They fit in stockings. Oh, okay. I can get some new shoes. Not a big stocking. I can get an extra large stocking. Okay, well I would suggest. Huh? A bike fit. Oh, that could fit. Like well, yeah. It's a gift card. It's a gift card. We don't actually have gift cards for that, but I mean if you call, I could probably just make one up. There's no point in going on out on this bike if you uh, you know, feel like you are riding with a creak in your neck or a Charlie horse in your calf. This is true. Uh, we also offer bike fits. We do. So, um, you know, and although we don't have a frilly bike studio, I know I've seen pictures of like, you know, glitz and glam studios. Um, we have you. Which is the knowledge and everyone seems very happy after a bike fit with arm. Yeah, so we have a little studio set up upstairs, um, that we do essentially, I mean primarily for custom bikes and whatnot. But yes, we do also offer fits here in uh, in. And you will not be feeling like you didn't have a optimal time with arm because you'll be here for eight hours. That is not eight hours. People are like, yeah, it takes about three to four hours for a bike fit. About seven hours later, I checked the camera to see if he's coming home. He's still here. It's not seven hours. I book three and a half hours for in our my calendar for a bike fit. Anyway. I don't like to rush. I suggest it. It's a lot, it's a lot of work. A bike fit. Okay. Good one. Um, so you didn't ask me. But, um, if Santa put it. I didn't you didn't. What would you what would you what would you like for Christmas? Under the tree? I. My optimal bike. Uh-huh. Would probably be some sort of super light e-bike. With a drink holder. Not a bottle cage. Not a bottle cage. No, like a proper Margarita glass holder. Oh, there you go. But it has to be seasonal. It'd be like, um, like a jingle juice. holder. Jingle juice. Or like a nice old-fashioned with some cranberries floating in it. I like this. I can get behind this. And I didn't I didn't think it beforehand, but after asking you guys, I think I would go with like a pink. Uh-huh. Not like a bright, not Barbie pink. Right. But like a like a nice pinkish like with orange like glittery tint. Oh, that'd be nice. But like, would you go like a powder pink? Like a we've done a powder pink before. No, no, no. Okay. I don't know like a nail polish pink. Like I don't know what that nail polish is a million different colors. Yeah, I was going to say that's not. I don't know, not not super bright. Like a more of a. Not pale. Not bright. I'm like a like a normal pink with an orangish tint sparkle in it. I like I like the pink and orange sparkle. I I can dig that. But not super orange. Oh my God, this is getting really complicated. Like a tangerine. Okay, I think you're just going to have to go to the color chart. Burnt tangerine. It could never be someone to name crayon. No. No. No. Not red. Not blue. Not orange. A little bit of green. But not green. Mommy, can I have the pink? Um, let me see, this says pink, but not too pink. Is that a good one? With a little orange. A little burnt orange. Anyway, uh, yeah. No. Totally. I I would I would probably need an e-bike. Yeah, that would be cool. I mean, we've we've talked about some e-bikes before. Um. That'd be cool. E-bikes have come a long way, man. They're they're getting really cool. Yeah, it's they're cool bikes. Anyway. I think that's it. Hopefully Santa puts something. But what what um what components did you want? Oh, I don't know. Whatever you put on it. Okay. I mean, you'd probably put like five saddles on it. Like, nope, nope. Nope, nope. Oh, probably. It would be more than that. And it doesn't really matter what my group set is because you tell me never to go past the third gear. I do tell you what gear. Well, because like you came into the shop. I mean the cheapest, I mean other than the electronics for the electric assist, probably be the cheapest group set. I'm not clipping in. Just flat pedals. Right, but the pedals aren't thing. You still want a nice. Flat bar. Uh, actually Shimano makes a nice uh, they make a nice, we've done on a couple bikes, we've done those internal gear systems and stuff and they've done they have a nice e-bike group set that's all electronic. It's all Tiger DI2 system or a version of the Tiger DI2 system. There you go. And I don't want like drops or anything on my bars because that hurts my back. So anything that can prop me up. Oh, I got it. I got it. I got it. Um. Yes, well, you don't want a road bike. And I don't know where the drink because it had to be flat bars because the drink holder's got to go on like the front. Because it's not. Right. Obviously. I can't oh my God, I've never been able to reach my water bottle. On the down tube. Yeah. I never could. I'd have to actually go to a I did in Santa Monica and I was riding my bike like every day. I'd have to go to a stop light. That bike though was. It was too big for me. It was too big. It was a little too big the bike, but also like that the yeah. The way it was super low on the down tube. The way they put that. So like it wasn't Like physically my arm was not long enough. You'd have to really bend over. I had to get off the bike, hurry up and take a drink and then jump back on. But the the the drink holder. Then you have to find out a way not to spill it. Oh, I could put a lid on it. Put a little uh steady cam gyroscope system on it so it's like active active stabilization on your drink holder. Yeah. Um, yeah. Okay. Well, let's let's uh wrap up Christmas. Christmas. Because next year's New Year's. Yep. And we'll try and figure out some sort of a fun countdown. Look back, I don't know. We'll figure something out. Okay. Um. Um, things to mention. Cleat wedges. Already Amazon. And they're selling out very quickly. They are. Um, like insanely quickly, like I don't even know if they're in stock anymore.
